The portrait series of bank notes below was started in 1960 with the pound note and the series was completed in 1964 with the introduction of the ten pound note. The series was so called because this was the first time a portrait of a reigning monarch appeared on a bank note. The notes were eventually replace by the pictorial series.

Ten Shilling note 10/- equivalent to 50p Known colloquially as the "Ten Bob Note" The note was withdrawn in 1970 prior to decimalisation and replaced with the 50p Piece.
The Ten Pound note was re-introduced in 1964 the first time that notes with a value over five pounds were issued since being withdrawn in 1943. It was superseded in 1975 by a smaller Pictorial Series version.
