RISHTON township is a dreary and barren tract 3 miles East-North-East of Blackburn, containing 1,740 rateable acres, of the value of £4,729, and nearly all the property of Henry Petre, Esq., of Dunkenhalgh, the lord of the manor.

But the total number acres in the township is not far short of 3,000, and its population in 1801 amounted to 1,051; in 1811, 1,084; and in 1821, 1,170, after which time it appears to have been on the decrease, for in 1831, it was only 919, and in 1841, 917.
