Red Lion Hotel.

Although not in Rishton, the Red Lion Hotel backs onto the Rishton boundary, and was once the Toll Bar for fees paid by travellers who wished to pass through Rishton.

Built in 1753, the date stone has the letters T. B. M. around it. Is it possible that this building was once Hard Farm, before it became a public house?

At the end of 2002, the red lion had shut down, and was for sale as a hotel complex with planning permission for many new bedrooms. Mathew Browns, or Lion Ales, depending on your age were the sellers.

During 2003, J. W. Lees took over the ownership of the public house, adding it to a chain of other pubs in their possession (but not in Rishton!). One part of the pub now deals with food, a new extension being built to the end of the original building for seating.
