1965/66 He made 32 League appearances for Bury F. C.

A right fullback who began his career as an apprentice with Blackburn Rovers in 1952 and for five years established himself as a regular for Rovers after making his debut in 1959. He played for Rovers in the 1960 FA Cup Final but by 1964/5 season was struggling to retain his first team place at Ewood Park and joined Bury for a nominal fee in April 1965. He made 32 appearances for the Shakers in 1965/6 season before moving to Irish club Drumcondra in September 1966, later returning to these parts to become player-manager with Great Harwood.

After his retirement John owned the sweet shop on High Street, near to the junction with Harwood Road.
