Butler Street May 2001

Butler Street runs off Hermitage Street, and across the top of Barn Meadow Crescent. Chapel Street and Fielding Street are also accessible from Butler Street.

There are houses on Butler street, these are attached to the end of the blocks of terraced houses that are running the attached street, but I think this only happens with the first block off Hermitage Street. There are two houses attached here.

At the end of the street are open fields stretching across to Church and Oswaldtwistle.

The picture on this page was taken during May 2001.

According to deeds from properties on hermitage Street, the land was originally leased in 1871 for a period of 999 years. The land was leased from Henry Petre of the Dunkenhalgh Estate to William Butler. Is it possible that this street is named after William Butler?

The Surveyor submitted plans showing a proposed lay-out of temporary housing at Tottleworth and at Butler Street on the 5th April 1945. An application was made for fifty temporary houses. The Surveyor was also to submit an alternative lay-out for temporary housing on Holt Recreation Ground.

On the 18th September 2002, the Rishton Area Council confirmed that a sign saying ‘Butler Street leading to Barn Meadow Crescent’ had been ordered and was due to be installed during the month.
