Coniston Way looking to the west. July 2001.

Coniston Way was built about 1996 (date has yet to be confirmed) by Barrett's builders. This was after they had applied for planning permission to Hyndburn Borough Council, and been refused, they then took the plans to the European Courts and won their case.

The company built Coniston, Ulveston, Ullswater, and Grasmere roads all at the back of the esplanade which took away more of the green land down towards the canal.

There was always a chance that these streets were going to be built. The roads leading to them such as Derwent and Hampshire had been left as open access roads since the original estate was built during the 1950’s. The people of the area and the council petitioned, but all to no avail.

Coniston Way leads off Somerset Road at the back of the esplanade side of Blackburn Road.
