Thornhill Avenue looking to Saint Albans Road.

Thornhill Avenue is not easily accessible. The Avenue runs from Saint Albans Road, up towards Blackburn road before doing a 90-degree turn and heading off to Churchill Avenue.

At the mid point turn there is a turning point, or part of the road leading to a couple of houses which are set back.

It is hard to imagine what the designers of this street were thinking at the time, it is a very peculiar layout for a street.

The above picture is looking back towards Saint Albans Road; the picture below is towards Churchill Avenue in the Blackburn direction.

Thornhill Avenue

The origins of the name are unknown. There is a Thornhill village in Dumfries and Galoway in Scotland, and also a town called Thornhill in Yorkshire, but was there a famous Thornhill that the road could have been named after?

In 1659, on the 22nd January, Raph Hindle of Thornhill in Rishton had his daughter baptisted at Saint Bartholomews Church in Great Harwood.

The surrounding or linking roads are Saint Albans, a town and Churchill, a name.
