The national total in 1995 stood at £11,843,385 and the North West raised one of the highest regional totals of £577,878.

The man who has co-ordinated Children In Need activities in East Lancashire for the previous nine years was Ken Broom of BBC Radio Lancashire. "It's controlled with absolute military precision. People think it just happens, but there's a lot of work from a lot of people," he said.

But that work looks to have paid off handsomely with dozens of events having taken place which have involved hundreds of people in all sections of the community with Radio Lancashire collecting £105,000.

The 240 youngsters of St Peter and St Paul's primary school in Rishton raised £2,029.88 with a variety of activities. There was an obstacle course, a penalty shoot-out, a spelling test and a netball shoot, but the highlight event was the Smartie Tube Challenge. "The children aimed to get as many items as possible into a Smartie tube and the winner had 189," said Mrs Alison Callon.

Among the items presented by one of the children was a dead ladybird - which died of natural causes!
