Reindeer have got the sack! DON'T tell Santa or Rudolph, but reindeer aren't welcome in Rishton. Plans for a herd of model reindeer to brighten up a wall in the main street have been axed by Hyndburn Council. The eight "running stags" now look set to be replaced with a mural designed by Norden High School pupils and other community groups.
The decision to drop the deer follows concern about similar public art schemes. The aim is to design a mural for High Street which will reflect the characteristics of the town. The project has been allocated £15,000 from town hall funds.
Phil Barwood, the head of planning at Hyndburn, said: "The members of the council decided they did not want to proceed with the reindeer scheme.
"There were mixed views about the appropriateness of the scheme and the decision was taken to have a project which would involve the community."
