Vivian Downing was formally known as Vivian Harrison, and left Rishton to go to University in 1964 and my parents moved to Blackburn in 1967.
She now lives near Chester and has no family left in Rishton.
At one time, lots of Cheethams and Sharples lived there. Grandma and Grandad (Albert and May Cheetham) worked in Clayton's Mill, May as a weaver and Albert as a tackler. Mum worked at the chemist's shop with Douglas Schaffer, then as secretary to Lincoln Howarth who was the land agent for Captain Petre who owned the Dunkenhalgh Estate and the office was in Henfield House, next to the hotel. What is the house used for now?
Dad, John Harrison, was a science teacher at Accrington Rd secondary modern in Blackburn, then became deputy head of Everton High School which was built near Queens Park Hospital in Blackburn. The school was built in the 60's, but is now pulled down.
Initially we lived at 64 Chapel St, and it was quite basic then, with a tippler toilet in the back yard, and no bathroom - tin bath by the fire! It was luxury to move to Clifton st, although there was no indoor toilet to begin with and we had one installed. To view her collection of Rishton Pictures please click here.
